Class List: Boy Scouts

Below is a sample of the classes that we currently teach at RCCK. 
We can also tailor classes and trips to meet the needs of your troop, just give us a call! 

We maintain our certifications from the American Canoe Association (ACA), American Red Cross, and National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS.)


First Aid & CPR

American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED for the Professional Responder  (8 hours) A definite must do course for anyone venturing in to the back country or on the water. Also a prerequisite for our Wilderness First Aid courses.

Wilderness First Aid The skills you need to respond to an emergency when help may be delayed.  Course covers Primary and Secondary Assessments; Head (Brain), Neck and Spinal Injuries; Heat-Related Emergencies and Hypothermia; Altitude-Related Illnesses; Allergies and Anaphylaxis; Bone and Joint Injuries and Burns; Wounds and Wound Infection. This is a two day course. Minimum age to participate is 15.

Paddling (taught on water)

Level 1 Solo & Tandem Canoe An entry level of canoe paddling skills is presented and practiced, allowing students to safely and effectively maneuver a canoe on flat-water. Basic information on boat control, paddling apparel, potential hazards and simple rescues. Self rescues, how to travel safely, winds and waves management. Taught on flat water to gentle moving rivers, with mild currents.

Level 1-2 River Kayak An entry level course covers the basic strokes maneuvering a kayak. Self and assisted rescues beginning with the wet exit are taught and practiced, so plan to get wet. L2 covers corrective forward strokes, traveling backwards under control,  more in depth rescues, how to travel safely, winds and waves management. Taught on flat water to gentle moving rivers, with mild currents.

Level 3 River or Whitewater Kayak Designed to build on the tools needed to travel down a moving river (up to Class I-II) including more emphasis on safety & rescue in class I rivers.

Classroom Based

Leave No Trace Designed for educators, students, children, girl/boy scouts, outdoor professionals, trail crews, outdoor clubs, and anyone interested in learning the seven Leave No Trace skills  and underlying ethics.

Knot Tying Learn the basics of all the knots you need to know as a paddler.  The Figure Eight family, prussics, munter hitches, bowline, butterfly knot, water knot (for webbing), double fisherman’s bend, etc.  Be the envy of all your friends at the put in when you bust out that inline figure eight to secure your bow and stern lines on your kayak!

Trip Planning Learn how to plan, pack, and be safe on your next paddling adventure.  Focus will be on multi-day or overnight trips.  Learn how to create your float plan, research your route, and monitor the 4 W’s. 

Dressing, Layering & Packing Learn how to properly layer for your next cold weather paddling adventure. what to do if someone falls into the water, and how to pack appropriately.

River Features & Hazards Just as when driving down the interstate you must learn to follow the signs and be constantly aware of the cars, trucks, signs, road conditions.  Rivers and other bodies of water are ALIVE with ever changing dynamics that have a direct impact on your and your fun and safety on the water.  Learn how to read and safely navigate the features of the river.
